Resumo Este estudo teve por objetivo estruturar a produção em volume de povoamentos de Pinus taeda L., através de diagrama de manejo, tomando como base os parâmetros: densidade populacional, altura dominante, diâmetro médio de área basal e índice de espaçamento relativo. Os dados utilizados são oriundos de 128 parcelas permanentes, as quais foram medidas anualmente até aos 18 anos de idade e conduzidas em densidade completa, com espaçamentos de 1,5 x 1,0 m e 1,5 x 2,0 m. Concomitantemente, foram utilizados dados de parcelas permanentes submetidas a diferentes intensidades de desbaste, sendo a densidade regulada pelo índice de espaçamento relativo. O diagrama de manejo elaborado permitiu a prognose do volume por hectare, do diâmetro médio de área basal e da disponibilidade de espaço de crescimento, através do índice de espaçamento relativo, a partir das variáveis altura dominante e número de árvores com precisão e baixo erro de estimativa.

Abstract This study aimed to structure the production in volume of Pinus taeda L. stands, through a management diagram, based on the following parameters: population density, dominant height, average diameter of basal area and relative spacing index. The data used came from 128 permanent plots, which were measured annually up to 18 years of age and conducted at full density, with spacing of 1.5x1.0 m and 1.5x2.0 m. At the same time, data from permanent plots subjected to different thinning intensities were used, and the density was regulated by the relative spacing index. The management diagram elaborated allowed the prognosis of the volume per hectare, the average diameter of the basal area and the availability of growth space, through the relative spacing index, from the variables dominant height and number of trees with precision and low error of estimate.

SUMMARY: This study aimed at modeling competition indices for individual trees of Araucaria angustifolia in natural forests. A total of 397 objetive trees were sampled in Lages and São Francisco de Paula municipalities. Through a non-linear regression analysis, 22 distance-independent and distance-dependent competition indices were modeled based on the diameter at breast height (d) and relative height (hrel: ratio between the total height of the objetive tree and the maximum potential height estimated for the same diameter). The adjusted equations of the indices according to d of the objetive tree achieved values of R² ≤ 0.546 (Syx% ≥ 15.0). The independent variable hrel improved the estimates, explaining up to 63 % of the variation in the data (Syx% ≥ 14.6). In general, competition indices - which consider in the calculation only the variables d of the objetive tree, d of the competitors, its horizontal distance and eventually the height variable- showed superior performance. Therefore, they are indicated for use in growth modeling of A. angustifolia, due to superior facility of application in natural forests. The developed equations showed to be good representations of the degree of competition at the level of the individual tree of A. angustifolia for the two evaluated sites, measuring only the diameter or including the height of the central tree for more accurate precision. The expansion of research to other sites along the distribution of the species will confirm the application of these equations to their full extent. In addition, this work contributes to the inclusion of competition indices in modeling of individual trees in uneven-aged mixed forests.

RESUMEN: El presente estudio modeló índices de competencia para árboles individuales de Araucaria angustifolia en bosque nativo. Fueron muestreados 397 árboles objetivo en los municipios de Lages y São Francisco de Paula. Mediante análisis de regresión no linear fueron modelados 22 índices de competencia independientes y dependientes de la distancia en función del diámetro a la altura del pecho y altura relativa (razón entre la altura total del árbol objetivo y la máxima altura potencial estimada para el mismo diámetro). Las ecuaciones ajustadas de los índices en función del diámetro del árbol objetivo alcanzaron valores de R² ≤ 0,546 (Syx% ≥ 15,0). La altura relativa mejoró las estimaciones, explicando hasta el 63 % de la variación de datos (Syx% ≥ 14,6). En general, los índices de competencia que consideraron solo los diámetros del árbol objetivo y de los competidores, sus distancias horizontales, y eventualmente la altura, presentaron desempeño superior, siendo así indicados para el modelado del crecimiento de A. Angustifolia, debido a la mayor facilidad de aplicación en bosque nativo. Las ecuaciones desarrolladas representaron bien el grado de competencia a nivel del árbol individual de A. angustifolia para los dos sitios evaluados, midiendo solo el diámetro, o incluyendo también la altura del árbol objetivo para una mayor precisión. La expansión de la investigación a otros sitios a lo largo de la distribución de las especies permitirá confirmar la aplicación de estas ecuaciones en toda su amplitud. Además, este trabajo contribuye a la inclusión de índices de competencia en el modelado de árboles individuales en bosques mixtos disetáneos.

ABSTRACT: Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze is a native tree species of major importance in southern Brazil. It is a regional symbol due to its iconic shape and stature in the landscape; its wood was once economically important and its seeds are an important source of food for the fauna and are presently used in regional cuisine. Despite its importance and apparent abundance, the species is facing extinction mainly as a result of unregulated exploitation and deforestation. This study catalogued the remaining individuals in order to add to the body of knowledge available on A. angustifolia, a species that has become rare across its historic range. The circumference at breast height (1.30 m), the total height, and the tree volume were measured (3,529 araucarias). We catalogued trees with a large diameter measuring them in loco over three years involving a journey of more than 6,800 km. The volumes of these old trees are very large, ranging from 38.2 m3 to 106.6 m3. The largest A. angustifolia individual is located in the state of Santa Catarina and measures 3.25 m in diameter. The giant araucarias with > 2.00 m in diameter are rare and only 13 individuals could be found in southern Brazil; a priority action at the governmental level is to recognize and preserve these monumental trees and together with a need for a public policy of drawing up specific inventories of large trees.

RESUMO O trabalho teve como objetivo geral avaliar a demanda de madeira para as serrarias no Vale do Rio Pardo e, ainda, analisar a viabilidade financeira de implantar uma base florestal que supra a capacidade ociosa de processamento dessa região. O estudo foi desenvolvido na área central do Rio Grande do Sul, abrangendo 13 municípios que compõem a Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Pardo. Para a obtenção dos dados foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com proprietários de serrarias da região. Essas foram avaliadas quanto ao seu consumo e capacidade instalada, que, respectivamente, foram de 7.005 m3.mês-1 e 12.330 m3.mês-1, apresentando uma capacidade ociosa na ordem de 63.900 m3.ano-1. O abastecimento de 30.336 m3.ano-1 ocorre através de fornecedores de fora da região. Com isso, verificou-se a necessidade de 1.836 ha para suprir a demanda anual destas serrarias. A substituição da importação de matéria-prima e o incremento da capacidade ociosa seriam responsáveis por gerar 55 empregos nas atividades de produção florestal e 471 empregos na indústria. Conforme análise financeira pelo Método de Monte Carlo, a receita anual gerada pelo empreendimento seria na ordem de R$ 1.756.347,00, correspondente a uma área de colheita estimada em 122,40 ha, distribuída nos municípios da região.

ABSTRACT The general objective of this study is to evaluate the demand for timber from the sawmills and to analyze the financial feasibility of establishing a forest base that meets the idle processing capacity. The study was conducted in the central portion of Rio Grande do Sul state, comprising 13 municipalities that constitute the Rio Pardo watershed. Data collection was done through interviews with farmers and sawmill owners. The sawmills of the region were evaluated as to their timber consumption and installed capacity, respectively amounting to 7,005 m3.month-1 and 12,330 m3.month-1, with an idle capacity of approximately 63,900 m3.year-1. The supply of 30,336 m3.year-1 is carried out by suppliers from other regions. This shows the need for 1,836 hectares for meeting the annual demand. The replacement of raw material imports and a better use of the idle capacity would translate into the creation of 55 jobs in forest production activities and 471 jobs in the industries. According to the financial analysis by Monte Carlo Method, the annual income generated by the enterprise would reach approximately R$ 1,756,347.00, corresponding to a harvest area estimated at 122.40 hectares, across the municipalities of the region.

RESUMO A relação entre o número de árvores por hectare e o diâmetro de Pinus taeda L. foi estudada com o objetivo de elaborar um diagrama de manejo da densidade para descrever a trajetória do diâmetro médio sob diferentes regimes de manejo com repercussão biológica e econômica. Os dados de densidade e diâmetro foram obtidos de árvores dispostas em diferentes espaçamentos, em parcelas permanentes, remedidas periodicamente até a idade de 18 anos. O modelo de autodesbaste de Tang foi utilizado para estimar a linha de máxima, usada para delimitar as zonas de concorrência, o que também permitiu determinar o diâmetro médio do povoamento sob diferentes densidades da população, bem como o regime de manejo ótimo para condução do povoamento para um determinado diâmetro objetivo. A análise econômica mostrou um valor presente líquido máximo de 15.587,60 R$/ha e 708,50 R$/ha.ano no regime de manejo com três desbastes, executados aos 9, 13 e 18 anos e com corte final aos 22 anos. Equalizando os horizontes de planejamento em 28 anos esse regime de manejo também se mostrou o de maior eficiência econômica entre os demais, com valor anual equivalente de 1.253,40 R$/ha.ano e uma taxa interna de retorno máxima de 14,83 % a.a.

ABSTRACT The work study the relationship of density and diameter in Pinus taeda L. stand aiming to determining the diagram density management and describe the average-diameter trajectory in different management regimen with biologic and economic repercussion. For that, experimental growth-data measured periodically until 18 years was used. Results demonstrated that the Tang model of density and diameter predicts the maximum line efficiently, using to delimit the concurrence zone that predicted the average diameter among different population densities, as well as determine the objective diameter of the optimal management regimen to conduce the stand. The economic analysis showed a maximum present net value of 15.587,60 R$/ha and 708,50 R$/ha.year at management regimen with three thinning at 9, 13 and 18 years and final cut at 22 years. The comparison of the management regimen after equal-horizons of plan in 28 years, showed the same management regimen with the maximum economic efficiency with annual equivalent value of 1.253,40 R$/ha.year and a maximum internal rate of 14,83 % per year.

RESUMO A produção brasileira de madeira industrial baseia-se essencialmente nas plantações florestais, porém, somente no setor de serraria existe ainda uma parcela apreciável de toras de origem de florestas nativas, desconsiderando o uso da madeira para fins energéticos. Com a criação de concessões florestais deu-se um passo importante rumo ao manejo das florestas nativas do norte do país. Já no extremo sul existem florestas nativas somente em estágios de recuperação, em propriedades familiares e cujo manejo é muito restrito. No presente artigo argumenta-se sobre a importância de manejar as florestas nativas, mesmo em pequenas propriedades. Para isto, toma-se como exemplo o caso da Áustria, cujo território é dominado por florestas nativas em pequenas propriedades. A tradição deste uso é baseada em uma legislação adequada, no trabalho do serviço de extensão e de pesquisa que geram um ambiente no qual os benefícios materiais e imateriais da floresta se aliam aos interesses da sociedade e aos econômicos dos proprietários. O manejo das pequenas unidades florestais permite alcançar um regime de sustentabilidade periódico, cujas intervenções silviculturais partem das condições locais, sendo o objetivo central a árvore e não o povoamento. Este procedimento de manejo, atualmente recomendado para a produção de madeira de elevado valor econômico, é descrito de maneira resumida.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian production of industrial timber depends mainly on forest plantations; only in the sawmill sector, there is still the use of a considerable amount of logs originating from natural forests. Recently forest concessions were created; this was an important step toward the management of native forests in the North. In the very South of Brazil, native forests exist mainly in stages of regeneration, belonging to small-scale farmers with restricted opportunities for management. The present article argues the importance of native forest management even when they belong to small landowners. An example from Austria is given where small ownership is dominating native forests. There is a framework of traditional use, an adequate legislation and the effort of extension service, able to ally immaterial social benefits and economic interest of forest owners. The management of generally small forest units is aiming a so-called periodic sustainability; decisions of silvicultural treatments are based on local conditions, where to an individual tree is given more attention than to the stand; the objective of management is mainly timber of high value; a summarized description of practical procedure is given.

RESUMO Neste estudo é testada a viabilidade econômica de doze alternativas de espaçamentos com Eucalyptus grandis para lenha. A produção de madeira foi avaliada aos oito anos e os preços das atividades obtidos com coeficientes da região. Nas receitas foi considerado o preço da madeira com casca em pé no mercado. A avaliação deu-se por cinco critérios: VPL, B/C, TIR, VET e CMPr. Considerando a taxa de desconto, todos os projetos mostraram-se viáveis economicamente. A maior produção ocorreu nos plantios mais densos, contudo, não foram os melhores pelos critérios econômicos, devido à maior imobilização de capital para implantação. O espaçamento de 5,0 m²/planta apresentou os melhores resultados em todos os critérios, sendo a melhor alternativa de investimento para uso energético. Seguido pelo espaçamento de 7,5 m²/planta, que se mostrou promissor, pois possibilita manejar a floresta visando obter multiprodutos. As alternativas com espaço inferior a 3,75 m²/planta não são recomendadas.

ABSTRACT In this study, it is tested the economic viability of twelve spacing alternatives with Eucalyptus grandis for firewood. The wood production was evaluated with eight years old and the price of the activities was obtained with coefficients from the region. In the revenue, it was considered the wood price from the market with bark and standing. The evaluation was made through five criteria: NPV, BCR, IRR, SEV and ACP. Considering the discount rate, all projects proved to be economically viable. The major production occurred in the densest plantations, however, they were not the best ones because of the economic criteria, due to the bigger immobilization of capital for the implantation. The spacing of 5,0 m²/plant presented the best results in all criteria, being the best alternative of investment for the energetic use. Followed by the spacing of 7,5 m²/plant, that proved to be promising, because it allows to manage the forest aiming for multi-products. The alternatives with spacings which are lower than 3,75 m²/plant are not recommended.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of selective logging on the growth dynamics of Araucaria angustifolia in a natural forest of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Treatments were based on percentage reduction of the basal area per DBH class, namely, T0 (control) = 0%; T1 (light selective logging) = reduction of 20-30%; T2 (moderate selective logging) = reduction of 40-50%. Data were obtained prior to the management interventions and four, eight and 13 years after selective logging. Changes between treatments were assessed using the following parameters: absolute density, absolute dominance, importance value index, and growth rates. Results show that population reduction and canopy opening provided greater recruitment and higher growth rates for araucaria in the management treatments (T1 and T2) compared with those of the control treatment (T0). These results reinforce that management practices are necessary for the continuous development of araucaria in this forest formation.

RESUMO O presente estudo visa fazer um diagnóstico das florestas plantadas na Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Pardo - RS, contemplando a caracterização das propriedades, dos florestamentos, e a disponibilidade e o consumo de madeira na região. A área de abrangência do estudo fica na região central do Rio Grande do Sul, cuja economia principal é a fumicultura, abrangendo 13 municípios que compõem a área de atuação do Comitê de Gerenciamento da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Pardo. A coleta dos dados foi conduzida no decorrer do ano de 2008. Para a determinação do tamanho da amostra, foi feita uma amostragem com probabilidade proporcional ao tamanho, sendo que o critério de distribuição das unidades amostrais levou em consideração o número de árvores por município e, dentro dos municípios, o número de árvores por classe de tamanho de propriedade. O método de amostragem utilizado no inventário florestal foi o de Prodan, além de ter sido feitas entrevistas com os produtores. A região é caracterizada por pequenos produtores rurais, e 61,4% da lenha utilizada na cura das folhas de tabaco é adquirida de terceiros, além disso, a maioria dos florestamentos possui espaçamentos reduzidos (2,26 m²/planta) e baixos índices de sobrevivência, na ordem 34,4% após 7 anos do plantio. O estoque atual de madeira é de 2.781.069 m³, o que garante um abastecimento para apenas 3,5 anos. Os dados levantados permitem constatar que os recursos necessários para investir na autossuficiência de lenha para a fumicultura, são de R$ 12.250.000,00, que poderiam ser alocados anualmente, durante sete anos, equivalente à rotação em talhadia simples, resultando em uma área de 80 ha/ano/município.

ABSTRACT The present study aims to make a diagnosis of the forests planted in the basin of 'Pardo' river (Rio Pardo), in RS state, by contemplating the characterization of properties, of forestations, and of the availability and consumption of wood in the region. The area of reach of the study is in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul state, which main economy is the tobacco crop, enclosing 13 cities that compose the performance area of the Management Committee of Rio Pardo Hydrographic Basin. The data collect were conducted during year 2008. In order to determine the size of the sample, it was made a sampling with its probability proportional to the size, where the criterion of the sample unity distribution took in consideration the numbers of trees per city and, inside the cities, the number of trees per class of property size. The sampling method utilized on the forest inventory was by Prodan, in addition to interviews taken with the producers. The region is characterized by small agricultural producers, and 61.4% of the firewood used in the cure of tobacco leaves is acquired from others, moreover, the majority of the forestation possess reduced spacing (2.26 m²/plant) and low survival indices, in order of the 34.4% after 7 years of the plantation. The wooden current supply is of 2,781.069 m³, what guarantees a supplying for only 3.5 years. The collected data allow to evidence that the resources necessary to invest in the self-sufficiency of firewood for the crop tobacco, are of R$ 12,250,000,00, that could be placed annually, during seven years, equivalent the rotation in simple coppice, resulting in an area of 80 ha/year/city.

RESUMO Uma mesma espécie florestal pode, em distintas condições ambientais, apresentar variações na forma de seu crescimento e em consequência na sua produção final. A altura dominante (h100) é uma das variáveis mais importantes para a prognose da produção florestal, visto que praticamente todas as demais relações funcionais de produção se baseiam na descrição do crescimento desta variável através das funções de índice de sítio. Este trabalho objetivou detectar as possíveis diferenças no crescimento em altura dominante (h100) entre dois clones de uma mesma espécie (Eucalyptus saligna Smith) e entre diferentes classes de aptidão de solos, sobre os quais estão implantados estes materiais genéticos. Uma rede de parcelas permanentes com remedições anuais ou bianuais foi utilizada para ajustar diferentes modelos de altura dominante em função da idade. A partir da seleção do melhor modelo e do uso de análise de covariância, buscou-se definir a existência de diferentes tendências de crescimento em altura dominante. As análises de tendências de crescimento através da utilização da função de Backman demonstraram diferenças significativas entre os dois materiais genéticos e entre diferentes classes de aptidão de solos para o clone 2864. O clone 4039 não demonstrou tendências de crescimento suficientemente significativas que justificassem a separação em dois grupos de classes de solo. Como resultado final, tem-se que três grupos de crescimento deveriam ser formados para descrever o crescimento em altura dominante: Grupo I - Clone 2864 e classes de solo 1 e 2; Grupo II - Clone 2864 e classes de solo 3, 4 e 5 e Grupo III - Clone 4039 em todas as classes de solo.

ABSTRACT A same species can, under different environmental conditions, show variations in its growth trend and consequently in its final production. The dominant height (h100) is one of the most important variables for the forest growth and yield prediction, since we can see that a several number of yield functions are based on the dominant height description by site index equations. This paper had as objective to evaluate possible differences in the dominant height growth between two Eucalyptus saligna Smith clones and among different productivity soil classes, on which ones are implanted both Eucalyptus saligna clones. A set of permanent plots with annual or bi-annual measurements was used to fit different models of dominant height by age. Since the best model was defined and, utilizing the analysis of covariance, we tried to define the existence of different growth trends in dominant height. The growth trend analysis by using Backman's function showed significant differences between both clones and among the different soil classes for clone 2864. Clone 4039 did not show a growth trend sharply different which would enough to separate this clone in two soil based groups. As a final result, we have that three different growth groups should be created to appropriately describe the dominant height growth: Group I - Clone 2864 and soil classes 1 and 2; Group II - Clone 2864 and soil classes 3, 4 and 5 and Group III - Clone 4039 and all soil classes.

RESUMO Os Diagramas de Manejo da Densidade (DMD) contribuem com o silvicultor, pois permitem o conhecimento da situação atual do povoamento, além de contribuir para a predição de condições futuras do povoamento. O objetivo do presente estudo é elaborar Diagramas de Manejo da Densidade para Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden, que servirão de modelos auxiliares para essa espécie, e estabelecer a variação de densidade adequada, ou faixa de manejo, para condução de povoamentos a ser demarcada no diagrama. Para área de estudo serão utilizados povoamentos em densidade completa. A construção do diagrama será baseada na linha de máxima densidade (linha A), obtida a partir de povoamentos em estoque máximo. A partir desta linha serão gerados os índices de densidade do povoamento (linhas B e C) de forma gradual e por proporção. A faixa de manejo será gerada de acordo com o peso de desbaste requerido, e após gerar o Diagrama de Manejo da Densidade (DMD). O trabalho executado permitiu encontrar uma regulação da densidade das populações de Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill, essa fundamental para a condução do povoamento.

ABSTRACT Density Management Diagrams (DMD) contribute to the forester, as they allow the understanding of the current situation of the stand, in addition to helping predict its future conditions. The aim of this study is to develop Density Management Diagrams for Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden, which will serve as auxiliary models for this species, and to establish appropriate density variation, or management zone, for managing stands to be demarcated on the diagram. Full density stands will be used for the study area. The construction of the diagram will be based on the maximum density line (A-line) obtained from fully stocked stands. From this line, stand density indices (B-line and C-line) will be generated in a gradual and proportional manner. The management zone will be made according to the required thinning weight, and afterwards it will generate Density Management Diagram (DMD). This study allowed us to find a possible adjustment of stand density of Eucalyptus grandis Hill, which is fundamental for management of the stand.

RESUMO A presente pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de estudar e modelar o efeito dos desbastes pré-comerciais e das podas no crescimento diamétrico, em um povoamento de Pinus taeda L. de 15 anos de idade, no Nordeste da Argentina. O estudo localizou-se em solo vermelho argiloso profundo com um delineamento sistemático de faixas para intensidades de desbastes e subfaixas para intensidades de podas. Os tratamentos de desbaste, realizados aos 3 anos de idade, foram: 1666 (sem desbaste); 833; 416 e 208 árvores ha-1. As podas foram realizadas a partir dos 3 anos e com frequência anual por 2, 3 ou 4 anos consecutivos, com remoção de 30, 50 e 70% da copa viva, respectivamente. O modelo geral obtido por regressão linear permitiu estimar o diâmetro da árvore de área basal média (dg) em função da idade com boa precisão (desvio médio absoluto em percentagem igual a 5.71), sendo as variáveis: árvores remanescentes, copa remanescente e número de podas consideradas nos modelos estimadores dos coeficientes da função geral. Aos 15 anos de idade, os diâmetros variaram entre 25.6 e 41.5 cm, para as densidades de 1666 e 208 árvores ha-1, respectivamente, sem poda. O crescimento do dg foi afetado negativamente pelas podas e positivamente pelos desbastes.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to study and to model the effect of pre-commercial thinning and pruning on diameter growth, on a 15th year old stand of Pinus taeda L. in northeastern Argentina. The study was established in a deep red clay soil, with a systematic design of blocks for thinning intensity and sub-blocks for pruning intensity. The thinning treatments, performed at 3 year old were: 1666 (without thinning); 833; 416 and 208 trees ha-1. The pruning were done annually, starting at 3 year old, and applied by 2, 3 or 4 consecutive years removing 30, 50 and 70 % of the living crown, respectively. The general model obtained by linear regression allowed to estimate, with good precision (mean absolute deviation as a percentage equal to 5.71), the quadratic mean diameter (QMD) in function of age. The variable remnant trees, remnant crown, and number of prunings were considered to estimate the general function coefficients. At 15 year old, the QMD varied from 25.6 to 41.5 cm to 1666 and 208 trees ha-,1 respectively, without pruning. The QMD growth was negatively affected by pruning and positively affected by thinning.

RESUMO Este trabalho foi concebido com os objetivos de determinar matematicamente os pontos de mudança da forma do fuste (pmf), o número de mudanças na forma geométrica, ajustar e comparar modelos matemáticos para estimar os diâmetros ao longo do fuste de Pinus taeda L. Os dados foram amostrados em árvores que cresceram em povoamento implantado em espaçamento de 2,50 x 2,50 m e manejado com dois desbastes, aos 9 e 14 anos, e corte final aos 30 anos pertencentes à Klabin S.A., em Telêmaco Borba, estado do Paraná. Quarenta árvores das classes médias e dominantes foram abatidas e cubadas pelo Método de Smalian, nas posições fixas de 0,10 m; 0,30 m; 0,80 m; 1,30 m; e após em comprimentos de 1 em 1 m, até a altura total. Na parte relativa à copa, os pontos de medição foram deslocados para os entrenós e a seguir foram retiradas fatias para análise de tronco, resultando, quando considerada a idade, em conjunto de dados relativos a 649 árvores com idades entre 8 a 30 anos, das quais foram selecionadas aleatoriamente, 50 árvores em cada classe de pmf para modelagem. As árvores foram agrupadas segundo os pmf de acordo com as quantidades de pontos definidos pela segunda derivada do polinômio do 5° ajustado para cada árvore. Com base nas estatísticas de ajuste e precisão na análise gráfica dos resíduos, nas estatísticas viés (v), média das diferenças (md) e desvio padrão das diferenças (dpd) foi selecionado o Polinômio de quinto grau para estimar os diâmetros em alturas relativas do tronco e, alternativamente, o modelo de Garay, seguido do modelo de Max e Burkhart com dois ou modificado para um segmento conforme o número de pmf definidos na derivada.

ABSTRACT This work was planned to describe the change point of stem taper (pmf), the number of geometric change points, adjust and compare mathematical models to predict diameters along of stem of Pinus taeda L. The data sampled were measured on trees growing in stands implanted with spacement of 2,50 x 2,50m, thinned at 9 and 14 years and final cut at 30 years old, from Klabin S.A., Telêmaco Borba, Paraná state, Brazil. Fourty trees between the average and dominant trees were cut and measured with Smalian method at the positions 0,10m; 0,30m; 0,80m; 1,30m; and from them at each 1m to the top. At crown part the measured point were moved among knot. After that, at each measured point, slices to stem analysis were cut. If considered the age, a group of 649 trees between 8 to 30 years old resulted of the analysis. From this group, 50 trees were selected at random of each pmf class to modeling. The trees were grouped in pmf by the number of change point of stem shape defined by the second derivative of the polynomial 5th. Degree 5th grad Polinon adjusted for each tree. The statistics of adjustment and precision, residuals graphics, bias (v), average difference (md), and difference of standard deviation (dpd) showed as better model the polynomial 5th. degree to predict the diameter at relative height of stem, and alternatively the Garay model and the Max-Burkhart with two segments or modify to one segment according to the number of pmf calculated by the derivative.

RESUMO O presente estudo objetivou estimar as tensões de crescimento da madeira de clones de Eucalyptus spp., por meio de algumas de suas propriedades dendrométricas, utilizando-se de variáveis Dummy. Foram selecionados 12 clones híbridos do gênero Eucalyptus, dos quais foram avaliadas as propriedades dendrométricas: diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP), espessura de casca (EC), altura (H), volume total (VOL); bem como a densidade básica (DB). As tensões de crescimento foram avaliadas de maneira indireta, por meio da deformação residual longitudinal (DRL), medida conforme o método CIRAD-Forêt. Foram definidas 12 variáveis Dummy com base nas características de cada clone. Após, a fim de estimar matematicamente a DRL, foram propostos quatro modelos utilizando-se como variáveis independentes: DAP, H, VOL, DB e as variáveis Dummy. Dentre as propriedades dendrométricas, a DB foi a única descartada por não aportar subsídios interessantes para a predição da DRL. Na comparação entre as variáveis Dummy, o clone 9 deu origem à variável mais discrepante em relação às demais. Contudo, os resultados obtidos indicaram que, embora tenha havido uma variabilidade significativa nos níveis de DRL na comparação entre os diferentes clones, os modelos matemáticos obtidos descreveram satisfatoriamente as tensões de crescimento dos mesmos.

ABSTRACT The evaluation of growth stresses in Eucalyptus trees and their influence on both morphological properties of trees and technological properties of wood have been aimed by several studies, which used indirect and nondestructive methods for these evaluations. The present study aimed to estimate growth stresses for woods from Eucalyptus ssp. clones trough some of their dendrometric properties, using Dummy variables. 12 hybrid Eucalyptus clones were evaluated by basic density (BD) and dendrometric properties: diameter at breast height (DBH), bark thickness (BT), height (H) and total volume (VOL). The growth stresses were indirectly evaluated by the longitudinal residual strain (LRS) following the CIRAD-Forêt method. 12 Dummy variables were defined based on the characteristics of each clone. After that, four models were proposed in order to estimate the LRD, using Dummy variables, DBH, H, VOL and BD as independent variables. Among the dendrometric properties, BD was discarded because it does not confer interesting aids to the LRD predict. Among the Dummy variables, clone 9 provided the most discrepant variable. The LRD of the clones were satisfactorily described by the mathematical models, although these values showed significant variability.

RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a estrutura populacional e os aspectos da regeneração de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze, Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg e Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil em diferentes condições ambientais e histórico de perturbação na Floresta Nacional de São Francisco de Paula - RS. Foram utilizados seis conglomerados de um hectare, com 16 parcelas (20 x 20 m) cada, nos quais foram amostradas as espécies em três classes de tamanho. A classe de tamanho II (CT II - diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 9,55 cm) foi inventariada nas 96 parcelas, a CT I (4,8 ≤ DAP < 9,55 cm) em 36 subparcelas de 10 x 10 m e a regeneração natural estabelecida (RNE) (1 ≤ DAP < 4,8 cm) em 36 células de 3,16 x 3,16 m. Em todas as parcelas de 20 x 20 m foram avaliados o banco de plântulas (BP - altura ≥ 30 cm e DAP < 1 cm), a chuva de sementes (CS) e o banco de sementes do solo (BS). Os dados foram analisados considerando todos os ambientes conjunta e separadamente para os agrupamentos identificados em estudo prévio na área. Foram avaliadas a estrutura diamétrica para a CT II e densidade e frequência absoluta para todas as etapas do ciclo de vida (CS, BS, BP, RNE, CT I e CT II). Os resultados indicaram grande variabilidade na densidade destas espécies nos diferentes ciclos de vida e ambientes florestais. Araucaria angustifolia demonstrou falhas no processo de regeneração em ambiente com menor histórico de perturbação, não apresentando padrão de distribuição "J invertido" (CT II) e menor capacidade de regeneração em relação às demais espécies nos mecanismos de regeneração (CS, BS e BP). Ilex paraguariensis e Blepharocalyx salicifolius apresentaram melhor estabilidade populacional em ambiente com menor nível de interferência antrópica (CT II). A primeira espécie apresentou melhores condições de regeneração em ambientes de solo com boa drenagem e a segunda espécie demonstrou preferência para solo mais úmido. Além disso, falhas no processo de regeneração das populações foram detectadas e variaram de acordo com as condições ambientais e o histórico de perturbação de cada área. Assim, identifica-se a importância de considerar os diferentes ambientes florestais, a autoecologia das espécies e de aplicar possíveis intervenções que visem melhorar a regeneração e equilibrar a dinâmica populacional destas espécies.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterize the population structure and aspects of regeneration of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze, Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg and Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil. in different environmental and disturbance conditions in the National Forest of São Francisco de Paula, RS state. Six conglomerates of one hectare were used, with 16 plots (20 x 20 m) each, where the species were sampled in three size classes. The size class II (SC II - diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 9.55 cm) was sampled in 96 plots, the SC I (4.8 ≤ DBH < 9.55 cm) in 36 subplots of 10 x 10 m, and the established natural regeneration (ENR) (1 ≤ DBH < 4.8 cm) in 36 cells of 3.16 x 3.16 m. The seedling bank (SB - height ≥ 30 cm and DBH < 1 cm), the seed rain (SR) and the soil seed bank (SSB) were sampled in all plots of 20 x 20 m. The data were analysed by taking into account all the different vegetation groups together and separately for each cluster identified in a previous study. For SC II, the frequency distribution of DBH was analysed combined with the analysis of absolute density and frequency for all life stages (SR, SSB, SB, ENR, SC I and SC II). The results indicated high variability in density of these species among the different life stages and environmental conditions. Araucaria angustifolia presented gaps in the regeneration process in areas that had low past disturbance, not showing the "reverse-J" distribution (SC II) and with lower regeneration capacity in relation to the other species (SR, SSB and SB). Ilex paraguariensis and Blepharocalyx salicifolius showed higher population stability in environment with low level of human interference (SC II). The first species demonstrated preference for soils with good drainage, while the second species for humid soils. Moreover, gaps in the regeneration process of different populations were detected, which changed according to environmental conditions and disturbance levels. Therefore, the results suggest the importance of taking into account the different vegetation groups, the species autecology and to apply possible interventions that aim to improve regeneration and balance the population dynamics of these species.
